Description

Position Summary:

The Water & Wastewater Technician performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City's water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This position ensures regulatory compliance, public health safety, and uninterrupted utility services by operating and maintaining water and sewer lines, lift stations, and related infrastructure.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Install, inspect, maintain, and repair water and wastewater lines, meters, valves, manholes, fire hydrants, and lift stations.
  • Locate and mark underground utilities in compliance with Texas 811/Dig-Tess requirements.
  • Monitor system pressures, flows, and conditions using SCADA and physical inspections.
  • Respond to service calls, leaks, main breaks, backups, and other utility-related emergencies.
  • Perform water quality testing and sampling in accordance with TCEQ regulations.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and repairs on pumps, motors, valves, and other mechanical components.
  • Complete work orders, daily logs, inspection reports, and asset management records.
  • Flush water mains and perform valve and hydrant maintenance.
  • Assist with utility locates, tap installations, and meter reading as needed.
  • Operate light to heavy equipment including backhoes, dump trucks, and jetting equipment.
  • Follow all safety procedures and regulations, including confined space entry and traffic control.
  • Regular and timely attendance.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Requirements

Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Texas Driver License; CDL Class B (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
  • TCEQ Class D Water and/or Wastewater License required (Class C preferred, or ability to obtain within 1 year).
  • One to three years of experience in water or wastewater utility work preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing, excavation, utility repair, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to use hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and computerized systems effectively.
  • Must be able to work after-hours, weekends, and holidays for emergencies or on-call shifts.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands:
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and may involve confined spaces or hazardous atmospheres.
  • Requires heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, climbing, digging, and prolonged periods of standing or walking.
  • Subject to rotating on-call duty and emergency response outside of normal work hours.
