Job SummaryThis role constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, wallboard, and related materials conforming to local building codes.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
- Selects specified type of lumber or other materials.
- Prepares layout, and marks cutting and assembly lines on materials; shapes materials to prescribed measurements; assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue; verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter's level.
- Erects framework for structures, builds stairs, and lays-out and installs partitions and cabinet work.
- Lays subflooring and covers it with building paper to keep out moisture and lays hardwood, parquet, wood strip, and block floors by nailing floors to subfloor or cementing them to mastic, asphalt, or other appropriate bases.
- Applies shock absorbing, sound deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
- Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates.
- Constructs forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
- Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures at ground level.
- Welds metal parts to steel structural members.
- Performs building walk-through for all relevant preventative tasks.
- Cleans shops, maintains tools and equipment, and performs inventory of tools and material in and around shop.
- Repairs furniture and chairs.
- Performs Other Related Tasks as Required
- Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually, and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite.
- Completes all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through Tarrant County College (TCC).
- Supports the mission, values, goals, and principles of the College.
- Works under the general supervision of the assigned campus leader.

RequiredMinimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Three (3) years' working experience related to the Essential Performance Requirements, including work in all phases of the carpenter trade performing construction or maintenance carpentry work.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- At least one (1) year working experience in higher education related to the Essential Performance Requirements.
- Completed carpentry apprenticeship or residential, commercial, cabinet making, or other related trade school program.
- Current Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour safety certification.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of finish carpentry and commercial rough framing.
- Knowledge in geometry, algebra, and measurement for accurate calculations.
- Knowledge of building codes.
- Skilled in excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, including strong listening, verbal, and written communication.
- Ability to identify and resolve issues that arise on a job site.
- Ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or problems or defects.
- Ability to generate work orders, enter comprehensive job details including labor hours, and materials used.
- Ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly while exhibiting strong attention to detail.
The physical demands described here are representatives of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to prolonged periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and kneeling. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The employee must be able to safely work with sharp tools and a variety of power equipment.
