Job SummaryThis role is responsible for applying coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings and other structures.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Read work orders or receive instructions from a supervisor regarding painting surfaces, remove old paint and prepare surfaces for painting with brushes, spray guns, or paint rollers; clean and care for brushes, spray guns, and other equipment.
- Generate work orders ensuring comprehensive job details, including labor hours and materials used, are entered.
- Select premixed paints or mix required portions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances to prepare paint that matches specified colors.
- Apply primers, sealers, stains, and varnishes to the correct surfaces.
- Apply paint with cloth, brush, sponge, or fingers to simulate special effects such as wood grain, marble, brick, or tile effects.
- Fill nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other filler and report need for carpentry repairs to supervisor.
- Remove fixtures such as pictures and electric switch covers from walls prior to painting.
- Spread drop cloths over floors and room furnishings, and cover surfaces such as baseboards, door frames, and windows with masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
- Erect scaffolding or set up ladders to perform tasks above ground level.
- Wash surfaces prior to painting with mildew remover and clean the worksite after the job is complete, including removing debris and returning the area to its previous condition.
- Adhere to all safety rules and regulations to create a safe working environment.
- Attend the workplace regularly, report to work punctually, and follow a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite.
- Complete all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through Tarrant County College (TCC).
- Support the mission, values, goals, and principles of the College.
- Work under the general supervision of the assigned campus leader.
- Perform other related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- Three (3) years' working experience as a journeyman painter.
- A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Completed vocational or technical painting program.
- Current Pro Painter Certificate, National Association of Home Builders’ Certified Painter, MPI Essentials of Paint and Painting Technology, MPI Maintenance Repainting Specification, or related certificate from a recognized painting apprenticeship program.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices of painting tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials common to the painting trade.
- Skilled in using the tools of the painting trade including the use of brushes, scrapers, spray guns, and sanding equipment.
- Skilled in excellent customer service and interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to identify and resolve issues that may arise during the project.
- Ability to work effectively with others in a team environment, fostering a positive and productive workplace culture.
Physical Demands
The employee is required to sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear, stand, walk, climb or balance on unstable platforms, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
The work environment includes a variety of outdoor weather conditions, significant heights, uncomfortable positions, occasional work near moving mechanical parts, occasional exposure to fumes, hazardous chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level may be loud and require use of personal protective equipment.
