Mechanical Insulator (Ammonia Systems)
This role focuses on installing, maintaining, repairing, and removing insulation systems on ammonia refrigeration piping, vessels, tanks, valves, and related mechanical equipment in industrial environments. The position supports the safe and efficient operation of industrial refrigeration systems by minimizing energy loss, controlling condensation, maintaining process temperatures, and protecting personnel from extreme temperatures. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience from settings such as food processing plants, cold storage facilities, chemical plants, or manufacturing facilities that use ammonia refrigeration systems.
Responsibilities
- Install mechanical insulation on ammonia refrigeration piping, vessels, tanks, valves, and associated mechanical equipment according to project specifications and industry standards.
- Maintain and repair existing insulation systems to ensure proper performance, energy efficiency, and temperature control across industrial refrigeration systems.
- Remove damaged or obsolete insulation materials safely and prepare surfaces for new insulation installation.
- Apply and secure appropriate insulation materials, including cellular glass, elastomeric foam, fiberglass, mineral wool, and polyurethane systems, based on application requirements.
- Install and seal vapor barriers to control condensation and protect insulation integrity on ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and layout plans to determine insulation requirements and installation methods.
- Use measuring devices accurately to cut, fit, and install insulation materials to precise dimensions.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, cutting equipment, and fabrication tools safely and effectively to complete insulation tasks.
- Inspect insulation systems for defects, gaps, or damage and make necessary adjustments or repairs to maintain system performance.
- Collaborate with other trades and team members on-site to coordinate work and support safe, efficient project execution.
- Follow established workplace safety practices and procedures to protect personnel, equipment, and facilities, particularly when working around ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Document work performed as required and communicate progress, issues, and material needs to supervisors or project leads.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of industrial insulation experience preferred.
- Mechanical insulation experience specifically with ammonia piping preferred.
- Experience working with ammonia refrigeration systems strongly preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and layout plans.
- Ability to accurately use measuring devices for cutting and fitting insulation materials.
- Knowledge of insulation materials including cellular glass, elastomeric foam, fiberglass, mineral wool, and polyurethane systems.
- Familiarity with vapor barrier installation techniques for condensation control.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, cutting equipment, and fabrication tools safely and effectively.
- Strong understanding of workplace safety practices in industrial environments.
- Experience in insulation for industrial piping and mechanical systems.
- Experience in mechanical, piping, or HVAC-related insulation work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
