DescriptionAlterman is seeking Layout Technicians to join our team!
The Layout Technician performs layout activities on active construction projects using Trimble Field Link and Robotic Total Station equipment. This role executes assigned layout points with increased independence and technical accuracy, supports BIM coordination efforts, and maintains electronic documentation of layout activity. The Technician continues developing technical proficiency while contributing to quality control and schedule adherence.
Duties:
- Meets with Foreman or General Foreman to review project priorities and daily layout needs.
- Independently sets up, operates, and maintains layout equipment including Tablets, Robotic Total Stations, Tripods, Prism poles, and MT-1000 prisms.
- Performs point layout and as-built data collection in accordance with BIM files and project plans.
- Maintains electronic logs of all points shot and submits documentation to the BIM department for review.
- Identifies discrepancies between field conditions and BIM/CAD files and communicates findings for resolution.
- Performs equipment calibration and software updates as required.
- Troubleshoots equipment, connectivity, and data transfer issues.
- Ensures proper barricading and safe equipment positioning on active jobsites.
- Communicates weather or site constraints that may impact layout scheduling.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 4 years of experience or CST Level II Certification from the National Board of Surveyors.
- Working knowledge of Trimble Field Link.
- Construction or electrical jobsite experience required.
Skills/Abilities:
- Proficient in operating Trimble Field Link and Robotic Total Station equipment.
- Able to execute layout tasks with minimal daily oversight.
- Able to interpret basic BIM/CAD layout information.
- Strong documentation and electronic reporting skills.
- Strong situational awareness in active construction environments.
- Able to identify layout discrepancies and elevate appropriately.
- Effective communication with Foremen, General Foremen, and BIM teams.
- Able to travel between multiple jobsites as needed.
- Frequently works on active construction sites.
- Outdoor work environment with exposure to varying weather conditions, loud noise levels, uneven surfaces, and potential hazards.
Physical Demands:
- Able to stand, walk, climb, bend, reach, stoop, kneel, lift, carry, push, handle products, and stretch for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at times.
- Must be able work in confined spaces.
