Summary
Assists motorists with disabled vehicles and observes or notifies the Transportation Management Center (TMC) of traffic flow and congestion problems on assigned routes. Independently patrols the route and accompanies others as partners or for training to detect, respond to, and initiate clearance procedures for congestion‑causing incidents, maintaining a consistent flow of traffic at the incident location. Extensive contact with law enforcement officials and the public is required.
Employees at this level work independently on assignments; unusual issues are referred to a supervisor.
- Responds to accidents/incidents on highways and assists in analyzing the situation to develop a plan for removing the incident.
- Communicates appropriately (using phonetic alphabet, 10‑codes) and utilizes radio communication equipment.
- Assists motorists with disabled vehicles on highways and removes vehicles or motorists from the roadway if necessary.
- Operates and maintains the incident response vehicle in accordance with preventive maintenance inspection (PMI) policies and procedures.
- Observes traffic control devices and traffic flow conditions while patrolling and reports major problems.
- Ensures all courtesy, ethical, and safety regulations/requirements are met to maintain a safe environment for employees and the public.
- Moves or picks up litter and roadway debris as required to ensure a safe thoroughfare.
- Assists in sanding bridges and roads, posting warning signs, helping the public, and performing other duties during emergency situations such as floods, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous materials spills.
- Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in automotive repair, roadway maintenance and construction, highway emergency response patrol activities, or traffic control activities preferred. Valid Texas Driver’s License, Class C or above.
- Technical training in transportation management, traffic or incident management, engineering, highway construction, or automobile repair preferred.
