Job SummaryThe Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA) Driver is responsible for operating a specialized crash‑absorbing vehicle used in roadway construction and maintenance zones. This role is critical for protecting workers, motorists, and equipment by providing a mobile safety barrier in high‑risk traffic environments.
Key Responsibilities- Operate a TMA‑equipped vehicle to support road construction, maintenance, and utility crews.
- Position the TMA truck to shield work zones from oncoming traffic.
- Maintain safe following distances and proper placement based on traffic control plans.
- Communicate effectively with crew members, flaggers, and supervisors to ensure safe operations.
- Perform daily pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of the vehicle and attenuator system.
- Monitor traffic conditions and adjust positioning as needed to maintain safety.
- Follow all local, state, and federal traffic laws and safety regulations.
- Assist with general labor tasks when not actively driving, as needed.
- Respond quickly and appropriately in emergencies or impact situations.
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) (Class A or B, depending on employer requirements).
- Clean driving record.
- Previous experience in construction, traffic control, or commercial driving preferred.
- Knowledge of roadway safety standards and traffic control procedures (e.g., MUTCD guidelines).
- Ability to work in high‑traffic and high‑risk environments.
- Strong situational awareness and attention to detail.
- Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.
- Capability to lift and move equipment (typically up to 50 lbs).
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Quick reaction time and ability to remain alert for long shifts.
- Primarily outdoors on highways, roads, and construction zones.
- Exposure to moving traffic, loud noise, and varying weather conditions.
- May require night shifts, weekends, and overtime depending on project needs.
