Job Overview:
The Texas Department of Transportation’s Fort Worth District seeks a Special Jobs Coordinator I to coordinate and schedule equipment, materials, and personnel for special transportation jobs. The role leads specialized maintenance and technical teams, responds to emergencies as needed, and works closely with private entities.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate scheduling of equipment, materials, and personnel for special transportation projects.
  • Lead and manage specialized maintenance and technical workers, ensuring independent on‑site performance while escalating unusual issues.
  • Coordinate with local authorities to develop and implement traffic management plans for special events and incidents, including handling and disposal of hazardous material spills.
  • Ensure compliance with established safety guidelines and that vehicles are properly equipped and maintained.
  • Inspect road conditions, work‑in‑progress, and completed work by crews and contractors.
  • Maintain records on materials, supplies, and personnel and perform related administrative duties.
  • Train employees on equipment use and procedures.
  • Coordinate inventory and distribution of personal protective equipment, conduct monthly safety inspections, and complete safety incident reports.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Graduate or Equivalent.
  • Work Experience:

    5 years in roadway maintenance, construction, traffic systems management, or related fields (full‑time or part‑time equivalents acceptable). Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Licenses and

    Certifications:

    Valid driver’s license;
    Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N endorsement or ability to obtain within 120 days of hire.
  • Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, incident management procedures, industry safety standards, intelligent transportation and traffic management systems.
  • Administrative skills: report writing, record keeping, use of computers and related applications.
  • Communication skills: effective verbal and written communication.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise, hazards from moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat or chemicals.
  • Required protective gear: respirator, hard hat or other device.
  • Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Reach, extend hands or arms in any direction.
  • Move on foot over long distances between work sites.
  • Speak and exchange ideas verbally.
  • Require a pre‑employment physical; must pass a drug test; additional safety impact position requirements include random drug testing and readiness to respond at 60 minutes on a 24‑hour basis.
  • Required to work weekends, holidays, hours outside 8‑to‑5, under inclement weather conditions, and in personal protective equipment.
