Job Description
Sr. Data Engineers collaborate with stakeholders—product teams, business partners, and cybersecurity—to identify and clarify requirements for data‑driven features and products. They independently understand the data ecosystem, security, privacy, and retention requirements necessary to support business and product features. They create and document technical designs, identify systems, architectures, tools, and storage needs, and present technical solutions to peers. They stay current with market trends and industry dynamics, applying this knowledge to drive innovation and ensure the safety and security of product components.
All roles require digital fluency, including the ability to work with emerging technologies such as Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot).
- Design code and systems that touch 40% of the world population while influencing Visa's internal standards for scalability, security, and reusability.
- Collaborate multi‑functionally to create design artifacts and develop best‑in‑class software solutions for multiple Visa technical offerings.
- Actively contribute to product quality improvements, valuable service technology, and new business flows in diverse agile squads.
- Develop robust and scalable products intended for a variety of customers including end‑user merchants, B2B, and business‑to‑government solutions.
- Leverage innovative technologies to build the next generation of payment services, transaction platforms, real‑time payments, and buy‑now‑pay‑later technology.

- Support relationships with product owners to gather and refine requirements for a product task, taking into account existing tools and solutions within the product.
- Begin to develop and design architecture solutions, considering integrations with other solutions.
- Provide relevant knowledge on the development of user documentation of solutions and follow standard processes in user documentation.
- Play a minor role in the development and delivery of new features within a product.
- 2+ years of relevant work experience and a bachelor’s degree, or 5+ years of relevant work experience.
- 3+ years of work experience with a bachelor’s degree or more than 2 years of work experience with an advanced degree.
- Knowledge of and ability to develop back‑end code (e.g., Python, Java, C, SQL, Spark, big data) in support of package and product development.
- Knowledge of Linux/Unix with ability to develop shell scripts, scripting for job scheduling using Airflow, and strong data analysis skills using SQL and knowledge of database technologies such as MySQL, Postgres.
- Knowledge of and ability to develop front‑end code (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) in support of package and product development.
- Ability to develop and use application program interfaces (APIs) for building software applications.
- Knowledge of and ability to use database software to maintain, modify, and output data.
- Knowledge of systems integration processes in which separately produced components or subsystems are combined and problems in their interactions are addressed.
- Knowledge of data structures, including data organization, management, and storage formats that enable efficient access and modifications.
This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in office will be confirmed by your hiring manager. Visa requires at least 3 days in office.
Travel requirement: 5–10% of the time.
Work hours vary upon the needs of the department.
