About the Role
Student Assistants support a variety of departmental functions and are responsible for performing duties that range from unskilled to skilled. Assignments are designed to align with a student’s academic interests and are tailored to the needs of the department.
Responsibilities Student Assistant I – Entry Level / Semi-skilledWork under immediate supervision. Tasks are routine and repetitive, and the supervisor provides detailed instructions and controls work flow.
Student Assistant II – Intermediate / AdvancedWork under general supervision. Duties are less routine and may involve specialized training on the job, access to confidential information, and use of sophisticated data systems. Requires a minimum of one year of prior experience in the same assignment.
Student Assistant III – Specialist / LeadWork under general supervision with significant independent judgment. Responsibilities may include directing lower‑level student employees. Requires a minimum of two years of prior experience in the same assignment.
Qualifications- Student Assistant I: Little or no prior experience or education required.
- Student Assistant II: Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required.
- Student Assistant III: Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required.
Skills and Competencies
- Ability to perform job assignments and exercise limited independent judgment.
- Effective balance of work and studies.
Eligibility
- Enrolled in classes for the current semester.
- Awarded federal work‑study through the financial aid office.
- Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Student Assistants are at‑will employees with no entitlement rights to any position and are not eligible for benefits.
- Hours are limited to a maximum of 19.5 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters and 28 hours outside of these semesters.
- Students may not be employed by the District in any other capacity during the same fiscal year.
- Regular attendance is essential; failure to meet attendance requirements may result in termination.
- Student Assistants are mandated reporters under California law and must comply with district policies and Title IX.
