The City of Fountain Valley Public Works Department seeks a dedicated Water Quality Technician to support the Cross Connection Control and Backflow Prevention Programs and maintain water quality monitoring. The role requires technical inspections, data entry, sampling, reporting, and enforcement of applicable regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Read, interpret, and implement state and federal water regulations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain water quality monitoring programs for potable and recycled water.
  • Interpret complex regulatory requirements and produce up‑to‑date compliance procedures.
  • Prepare, review, synthesize, and submit reports, correspondence, and statistical data to local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Conduct technical inspections, enforce applicable laws, and perform data entry to maintain computerized records.
  • Perform manual tasks related to inspection, testing, maintenance, repair of water lines, backflow devices, valves, engines, wells, reservoirs, pumps, lift stations, meters, and connections.
  • Collect and analyze water samples, validate laboratory results, and report monitoring data.
  • Execute shutdown tests, collect chlorine residual and bacteriological samples, and assist with water division production and distribution personnel as needed.
  • Assist in preparing reports and correspondence; perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in municipal water operations.
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
  • Backflow Prevention Device Tester Certification and registration with the Orange County Health Care Department.
  • State Water Distribution Operator Certification Grade II upon hire and Grade III plus State Water Treatment Operator Certification Grade I within one year.
  • American Water Works Association Cross Connection Specialist Certification within one year.
  • Availability for standby duty and periodic call‑out during off‑time.
  • College‑level coursework in water technology or related field highly desirable.
