Position Summary

The Memorial Medical Center Foundation (MMCF) raises and stewards philanthropic support for Long Beach Medical Center (LBMC) and Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital (MCWH). Reporting to the Executive Director of Administration and Operations, the Controller is responsible for providing management, direction, and oversight of all financial activities at MMCF, including financial reporting, investment portfolio oversight, external audit management, tax compliance, budgeting, forecast and variance analysis, planned giving/deferred gift support, internal controls, and financial reporting systems.

The Controller will also build sustaining relationships with Memorial Health System (MHS) financial staff and ensure compliance with MHS system‑wide financial standards, policies, and procedures.

Essential Functions
  • Support the mission, vision, and values of LBMC, MCWH, and MMCF, and actively work to enhance the reputation of LBMC and MMCF.
  • Work with MMCF executive management and directors to strategically plan and implement key MMCF financial initiatives, providing financial analysis, insight, and guidance.
  • In conjunction with MMCF executive management and input from the Chief Financial Officer of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, develop and design fiscal objectives for MMCF aligned with MHS fiscal objectives.
  • Ensure all activities adhere to non‑profit GAAP and financial accounting standards, providing accurate financial statements in a timely manner to required system executives, relevant boards, and committees.
  • Monitor revenue, expenditures, receivables, and payables; oversee and carry out monthly/daily general accounting, account reconciliation, and journal entry preparation.
  • Assist in design, format, and direction of MMCF standard operational/performance reports and use them to facilitate operational improvement and executive decision making.
  • Monitor overall investment performance to ensure short‑term and long‑term investment strategies are met within the guidelines of MMCF Investment Policy Statement, working with the Investment Committee to manage portfolio risk.
  • Manage cash flows for capital and program support to each campus and serve as liaison to contracted investment management firms and banking relationships.
  • Lead the annual audit, ensuring a clean, unqualified opinion from the external audit firm; communicate potential material audit issues and recommended solutions to the MHS Audit Committee and MMCF executive management.
  • Oversee and provide direction for the annual tax return, trust tax returns, and other required compliance filings, accurately and timely.
  • Prepare the annual revenue and expense operating budget, manage variance analysis, address budgetary issues, and recommend financial risk mitigation.
  • In collaboration with MMCF development staff, analyze existing, maturing, and proposed planned/deferred gifts.
  • Collaborate with Long Beach Memorial Medical Center Chief Financial Officer and Finance Executive Director to ensure accurate intercompany reporting of grants and operating expenditures.
  • Advise MMCF President and Executive Director of Administration and Operations on potential and actual financial issues impacting strategic initiatives, financial goals, compliance, or legal standing.
  • Track and report on various finance and accounting metrics.
  • Engage with national or international accounting professionals focused on charitable fundraising to resolve industry scope problems and share best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Work Experience
  • Minimum 7 years of finance experience.
  • Minimum 4 years of leadership experience.
  • Blackbaud Finance Edge experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills.
Education / Licensure / Certification
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or related field (required).
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) (preferred).
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) (preferred).
