Job SummaryThe Assistant Manager, Store will manage daily operations of a retail store and act as the Retail Store Manager in the Manager’s absence. Assistant Managers are responsible for meeting financial goals to generate the income and donations necessary to support Goodwill’s mission and community programs. Assistant Managers must empower staff, inspire development, and take an active, hands‑on role to achieve success.
Responsibilities include merchandising, donation collection, loss prevention, point‑of‑sale systems, product quality control, pricing strategy, community rapport, and customer relations. Assistant Managers must manage budgeting, financial reporting, and profit and loss in partnership with the Retail Store Manager.
Store Assistant Manager:
- Work closely with the Retail Store Manager to achieve goals and objectives and to increase sales and donations.
- Recommend changes to operational procedures to maximize expense‑to‑revenue ratios.
- Promote safety for all employees, ensuring OSHA and CARF standards are met; may serve as Safety Representative on the operations and sales safety sub‑committee.
- Become certified on pallet jack, walkie stacker, forklift, hand dolly, or other equipment; train staff and enforce safety standards during product movement.
- Maintain awareness of competition and retail trends to suggest appropriate actions.
- Maintain a strong knowledge of the point‑of‑sale (POS) system.
- Empower, lead, and manage retail store staff, ensuring safety, productivity, and success.
- Oversee daily operations of all functional areas: sales floor, storefront, donation store, production areas, internal product movement, and storage facilities.
- Directly responsible for hiring, performance management, employee goal setting, and termination recommendations for at least one department.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of Goodwill policies, the Employee Handbook, safety standards, and all supplemental policies.
- Partner with the Retail Store Manager to conduct employee training, awareness, and knowledge transfer meetings.
- Be on call for alarm notifications after hours.
- Job duties may extend beyond the listed tasks and may include additional responsibilities as required.
Bench Store Assistant Manager:
- Provide coverage for unexpected or planned absences and facilitate growth and training for team members.
- Collaborate with other management personnel to enhance store performance and contribute to business development initiatives.
- Assignments may be required in locations beyond the immediate geographic area.
