Utility Scale Solar O&M Technician / Maintenance Technician
This role focuses on maintaining and optimizing utility-scale solar facilities by performing preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on solar equipment and supporting infrastructure. You diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, and control system issues, manage maintenance schedules and documentation, and coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations. You actively support commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting activities, use SCADA and monitoring systems to identify performance issues, and contribute to continuous improvement of system reliability and safety.
Responsibilities- Perform preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on utility-scale solar equipment and associated infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electrical, mechanical, and control system failures to restore equipment to safe and reliable operation.
- Conduct inspections and maintenance on medium-voltage and high-voltage electrical equipment, including switch gear, transformers, breakers, relays, and collection systems.
- Follow, update, and manage maintenance schedules and work orders to meet operational, warranty, and compliance requirements.
- Coordinate and oversee maintenance subcontractors and specialty vendors, ensuring quality workmanship, adherence to safety standards, and timely completion of tasks.
- Support commissioning, functional testing, and troubleshooting of electrical and control systems for new or modified equipment.
- Assist with root cause analysis of equipment and system failures and implement corrective actions to improve reliability and reduce downtime.
- Utilize SCADA, monitoring, communications, and automation systems to identify asset performance issues and initiate appropriate maintenance actions.
- Maintain accurate maintenance documentation, including work orders, reports, and equipment records, in accordance with company standards.
- Respond to equipment alarms and plant issues during normal operations and emergency situations, taking appropriate corrective measures.
- Adhere strictly to company, customer, OSHA, NFPA 70E, and electrical safety requirements in all work activities.
- Participate actively in site safety programs, including job hazard analyses, lockout/tagout procedures, and energized electrical work planning.
- Support inventory management by tracking spare parts, tools, and consumables, and assist with equipment procurement as needed.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of maintenance experience in utility-scale solar operations and maintenance, industrial maintenance, electrical maintenance, manufacturing or factory maintenance, commercial building automation and controls, power generation facilities, or machinery and automated equipment maintenance.
- Strong working knowledge of electrical systems and electrical troubleshooting techniques.
- Working knowledge of mechanical equipment maintenance and repair practices.
- Working knowledge of preventative maintenance programs and scheduling.
- Working knowledge of industrial safety practices and procedures.
- Working knowledge of control systems and automation in an industrial or power generation setting.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical one-line diagrams accurately.
- Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and understand circuit layouts.
- Ability to read and interpret control schematics for automation and protection systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and equipment specifications.
- Hands-on medium-voltage or high-voltage maintenance experience.
- PLC troubleshooting and programming experience with platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, or similar.
- Experience working with communications equipment, networking, fiber optics, SCADA systems, and remote monitoring platforms.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, mechanical, and control systems.
Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Technical degree, trade certification, military training, or equivalent experience is preferred.
