Position SummaryThis position functions independently in an expanded clinical role providing expert direct and indirect nursing care to patients who have complex care needs. This includes care in both an ambulatory, long-term care, and palliative care settings. Nursing care duties will include patient assessments, treatments, assisting physicians in providing medical services, management of medications, provision of emergency care, and maintenance of medical records.
This position will also actively assist in training and development of staff in Nursing Practice and the Nursing process, and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI). The incumbent will actively participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care. The incumbent will also work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team within the institution, other DOC institutions and the community on planning and evaluating care for patients with multiple medical and psychiatric needs, and will participate in collaborative program planning to meet the health needs of patients at the institution and in the community when they are due to be discharged.
Information
The starting pay is between $47.74 and $54.49 per hour, plus excellent benefits. Pay will be set in accordance with the Compensation Plan and Wisconsin Administrative Code in effect at the time of hire. The pay schedule/range is 11-01. A 12-month probationary period is required.

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application. The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled.
Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting. The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screens. Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency to employment.
- Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Wisconsin.
- Must be certified in basic CPR/AED and maintain recertification per licensure.
- Collaborating with supervisors regarding general unit management.
- Identifying and planning to meet learning needs of complex care/disease patients and other nursing staff related to delivering high quality nursing care.
- Functioning as a nursing team lead (e.g. charge nurse) in an ambulatory setting.
