Position: Local Water and Sewer Utility Maintenance I

Utility Maintenance I

The Village of Fox Lake is seeking interested applicants for the position of Utility Maintenance I in our Local Water & Sewer Department.

Position Summary

The Utility Maintenance I position assists in the operations and maintenance of the Village’s Sewer and Water service, including six groundwater wells, four elevated storage tanks, three iron filtration tanks, a booster station, and twenty-six sewer lift stations.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Installs, cleans, reads and repairs or replaces water meters.
  • Checks meters, gauges, pumps and control panels to verify correct operation of equipment and records information.
  • Operates and maintains pumps, control panels, chlorinators and chemical feed pumps. Inspects.
  • Checks lift stations for proper operation.
  • Assists with locating and repairing sewer/water mains.
  • Maintains fire hydrants, well house structures and water towers.
  • Cleans and televises sewer mains.
  • Attends safety meetings/training and follows safety precautions according to regulatory standards.
  • Assists in completing daily rounds and chemical testing.
  • Logs completed daily maintenance and work orders; documents required information.
  • Performs grounds maintenance and maintenance checks of all Department vehicles.
  • Performs related duties and manual labor as assigned.
  • Mows, weeds, and clears water and sewer locations such as well houses and pump stations as needed.
  • Collects and inputs data for the Village’s GIS system.
  • Assists in restoration work and the repair/preventative maintenance of water and sewage pumps, motors, generators, and other mechanical/electrical equipment.
  • Completes other tasks assigned by supervisor or the Public Works Director.

Minimum Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and must be capable of passing the IEPA collection system certification within one year of hire. Experience and Education

A High School diploma or equivalent. Technical training is desired. Candidates must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsement, or must be able to obtain such a license within six (6) months of hire. Candidates must pass a pre‑employment physical examination and drug/alcohol screen following a conditional offer of employment. A thorough background investigation, including personal and professional references and criminal background, will be conducted prior to offer of employment.

  • Computers and electronic data processing.

  • Operation of maintenance tools and equipment used by the position.

  • Proficient in computer software programs and office applications, including Word, Outlook and Excel.

  • Make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
  • Compute volume, flow, detention, flow, velocities, loading, fates, percentages and ratios.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints, Village maps and procedure manuals.
  • Prepare accurate reports and correspondence.
  • Interact tactfully with the public and co‑workers.
  • Work weekends and holidays, be on‑call and respond to calls during non‑working hours.
Working Conditions

The work environment includes moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, occasional work in high or precarious places, wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat, noise and vibration. The employee frequently uses hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment, reaches, walks, stands, kneels, crouches, or crawls, and must lift or move up to 25 pounds routinely, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Contacts Outside of Department

This position interacts with residents on a minimal basis and regularly interacts with other Village employees.
