Position Summary

The Project Engineer II (SPE) works closely with the Project Manager to support and manage the structural design process from project inception through to construction. In this role, the SPE is responsible for conducting structural analysis, preparing detailed plans and specifications, and reviewing contractor submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs to ensure compliance with the design intent. The SPE mentors junior engineers and BIM technicians, providing guidance on project work and technical aspects.

The SPE also facilitates communication and coordination among clients, project architects, municipal agencies, and other design-team members to ensure the structural design aligns with project objectives and regulatory standards. The SPE actively engages in client calls, providing technical expertise and contributing to project discussions.

Engineering Skills and Responsibilities
  • Strong knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, materials, and procedures within structural engineering and how to apply them to projects.
  • Designs, formulates plans, and supervises the production work of junior engineers.
  • Writes clear summaries and memos of own work.
  • Identifies project issues and presents solutions to junior teammates.
  • Reviews shop drawings to ensure alignment with architectural and structural design plans; confirms materials, dimensions, and fabrication methods meet technical requirements; marks up corrections and approves drawings when they meet design and safety criteria.
  • Understands and implements the selected approach in all project areas and directs junior engineers.
  • Accurately implements design criteria and independently performs analyses and design with minimal direction.
  • Extensive knowledge of building codes and how codes impact design; ensures each project meets local codes, regulations, and quality standards.
  • Organizes materials for supervisor review prior to drafting or typing; performs back checking of project documentation.
  • Designs structural elements using software such as Rhino, Revit, RISA, ETABS, SAP, and RAM; maintains high attention to detail.
  • Develops critical thinking and analytical skills to assess situations, evaluate solutions, and make informed decisions.
  • Understands the importance of building client and business relationships.
Client and Communication Skills
  • Effectively communicates verbally and in writing with clients, teammates, and management.
  • Participates in client calls and meetings; facilitates communication among clients, architects, and design-team members; maintains professional and respectful client interactions.
  • Provides input to maintain and cultivate client relationships; develops the ability to run meetings professionally and to deliver presentations confidently.
  • Negotiates and closes with clients while maintaining positive relationships.
Business Development and Revenue Generation
  • Understands resource utilization, project budgets, and revenue/labor considerations; contributes to budgeting and proposal preparation.
  • Charges own labor to proper project numbers and participates in budgeting and collections.
  • Supports Business Development initiatives and helps broaden the professional network.
