Role Overview
Asplundh Engineering Services (AES) is looking for Substation Physical Design Engineers to join our teams in the Southeast.
As a Substation Physical Design Engineer, you will work on client projects, including investor‑owned and municipal utilities, independent power producers, renewable energy, and large commercial and industrial customers.
Responsibilities- Execute substation physical projects from concept through completion.
- Read and design substation physical drawings such as one‑line, three‑line, plan‑section, foundation, and grounding drawings.
- Perform QA/QC checks on substation physical design projects.
- Create and verify bill of materials for substation physical projects.
- Attend site visits at customer locations.
- Collaborate with internal teams and clients to meet project needs, schedules, and budgets.
- Maintain compliance with quality control and safe work practices while adhering to project scope, schedule, and budget.
- Entry‑Level: associate or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field with three or more years of related substation physical design experience.
- Mid/Senior‑Level: associate or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field with six or more years of related substation physical design experience.
- Senior/Lead‑Level: associate or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field with ten or more years of related substation physical design experience.
- Experience with grounding studies/lightning protection and lighting studies.
- Experience in substation design (medium, high, and extra‑high voltage) and IEEE/ANSI standards.
- Strong analytical skills and proven problem‑solving abilities in both team and independent environments.
- Technical competency in WinIGS, CDEGS, Micro Station, AutoCAD, Revit, SEL or GE relays.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with internal team and clients to meet project needs and deadlines.
- Collaborator and leader who can work effectively in a team environment.
- Self‑starter who works independently with minimal direction.
- Willingness to travel to project and/or client sites.
- EIT professional certification.
- PE license.
- Experience with bus calculation.
- Master’s degree in a related field.
