Position Summary

The School Nurse provides direct support to students by assisting them to maintain, improve, or adapt to their health status. By contributing significantly to the attainment of optimal health and educational potential, the School Nurse ensures that all students have equal access to high‑quality instruction and academic achievement.

Training and Experience
  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or a related accredited program.
  • Professional experience in school, pediatric, public health, or related nursing environment preferred.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is encouraged.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Massachusetts School Nurse License at all levels.
Skills and Ability
  • Clinical expertise in school health, pediatric care, infectious disease management.
  • Clinical supervision of RNs, LPNs, and CNAs per Massachusetts Nurse Practice Act.
  • Ability to interpret medical data for Special Education (SPED) evaluations and Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs).
  • Emergency leadership: manage medical emergencies, allergy protocols, technology‑dependent student care.
  • Maintain and audit computerized medical records for compliance with state mandates.
  • Knowledge of school social work/counseling ethics, confidentiality, record‑keeping.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace for Education and data‑tracking software.
  • Clear communication with teachers, parents, staff.
  • Demonstrated cultural proficiency and inclusion.
  • Professionalism, punctuality, composure in high‑stakes situations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Health Care & Student Support
    • Initiate and oversee all state‑mandated screening programs (vision, hearing, postural, BMI) and facilitate immunization compliance.
    • Triage students/staff with injury or illness and administer medication in compliance with school policy and state regulations.
    • Develop individualized health care plans (IHCPs) for students with documented health needs and provide special care for technology‑dependent students.
  • Safety & Environment
    • Educate and promote compliance with universal precautions and identify unsafe conditions in the school setting.
    • Collaborate with school personnel to develop and facilitate safety plans for students with chronic health conditions.
  • Education & Consultation
    • Consult with teachers regarding health issues that may impact learning and assist in modifying educational programs to meet health needs.
    • Act as a nurse educator for students, parents, and staff regarding specific health topics and wellness.
  • Management & Compliance
    • Maintain computerized medical records and submit all reports mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
    • Interpret health assessments and medical data for Special Education (SPED) evaluations.
  • Professional Responsibilities & Development
    • Commit to ongoing professional development, staying current with evidence‑based practices and antiracist pedagogical frameworks.
    • Contribute to the school community by participating in staff meetings, serving on committees, and supporting extracurricular activities.
    • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for educational support staff and volunteers.

    • Environment: normal school environment, exposure to bodily fluids and varying noise levels, outdoors for recess and drills.
