Mission

Our mission is to cultivate within each member of a diverse student body an intense commitment to self and community, the courage and insight to set high standards for academic and personal success, and the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to achieve those standards.

About the School

The Christa McAuliffe Charter School is a diverse Expeditionary Learning community for grades 6‑8. Our hands‑on curriculum inspires high achievement through active learning, character growth, and teamwork. Position Overview

The primary function of the Speech Therapist (or Speech‑Language Pathologist) is to provide direct services to a caseload of students who have communication goals in their Individualized Education Programs (IEP). The Speech Therapist supports students to meet their goals through a push‑in/pull‑out model and also supports teachers and instructional leaders in applying instructional strategies to develop all scholars’ communication skills. The Therapist reports directly to the Director of Special Education and collaborates regularly with Adjustment and Guidance Counselors, the School Psychologist, and the Dean of Culture.

The Therapist keeps logs of service delivery, assesses progress, and reports on each student’s progress during IEP Team Meetings, trimester progress reports, and ongoing communication with case managers and families. Initial and three‑year re‑evaluations are conducted, and the Therapist collaborates in IEP development with the Team.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Team Chair and the Director of Student Services to establish and implement an annual service delivery plan and professional schedule.
  • Maintain organized and thorough service delivery and progress notes for students on caseload.
  • Participate in Team meetings to develop, transfer, or review an Individual Education Plan and determine modifications, accommodations, and assessment approaches necessary to provide a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment.
  • Conduct speech and language evaluations, including classroom observations, to inform initial and three‑year re‑evaluations and other unique circumstances.
  • Participate in 3‑year evaluation meetings, annual review process, and incoming student and high school transition meetings for students on caseload.
  • Provide feedback to families and case managers about student progress performance; respond in a timely manner to inquiries from families.
  • Support general and special education teachers to create a nurturing learning environment that allows for maximum feasible inclusion opportunities; engage faculty in professional learning via consultations, grade‑level Team Plus meetings, or whole‑faculty professional development.
  • As needed, participate in grade‑level meetings with teachers to address students of concern.
  • Participate in professional development activities as determined relevant by the Director of Student Services.
  • Assist with an advisory group (Crew), lunch and recess coverage, supervising bus arrivals and departures, or other duties assigned by the Director of Student Services.
Qualifications
  • Speech‑Therapy or Speech‑Language Pathology licensure (e.g., Massachusetts SLP and DESE licensure).
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher;
Master’s degree in Speech‑Language Pathology preferred. ASHS Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) preferred.
  • Demonstrated passion for and experience working with middle‑school students.
  • Belief in and commitment to the Expeditionary Learning mission and whole‑child educational philosophy.
