Classroom Teacher

The Classroom Teacher is responsible for providing quality educational service to Walden School students. This includes planning creative lessons and classes that satisfy IEP goals, maintaining a classroom environment that fosters learning, and implementing behavior or treatment plans as they apply to the classroom setting.

Functions and responsibilities include:

  • Working collaboratively with the school's clinical team to adapt and modify their instruction to meet the individual needs of their students.
  • Demonstrating sensitivity to cultural differences within the school community.
  • Preparing daily lesson plans and educational programming consistent with students' Individualized Educational Plans.
  • Providing detailed lesson plans and assignments for classroom assistants.
  • Developing thematic units that identify long-range goals and objectives with respect to the educational and emotional needs of the students, taking into account the varying learning styles of individual students.
  • Preparing instructional materials incorporating principles of effective instruction, such as: visual aids, curriculum modifications, and mediated learning principles.
  • Writing educational portions of IEPs, quarterly reports, and other reports as necessary, according to established deadlines.
  • Reporting on students' progress through written and verbal communication.
  • Making learning goals clear to the students and maintaining high standards and expectations.
  • Performing other tasks as assigned by the Department Supervisor and/or Program Leader.

Requirements include:

  • Masters Degree in Education/Deaf Education
  • Massachusetts State Certification (preferred)
  • A minimum of conversational fluency in American Sign Language required, with native, or near-native ASL fluency preferred
  • Verbal and written communication skills are at sufficient level to ensure effective communication
  • Understanding of child/adolescent mental health
  • Interpersonal skills developed to a level which will allow smooth cooperation at all levels within the agency
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record when driving students or performing work-related duties
