The Christa McAuliffe Charter School is a diverse Expeditionary Learning school for 350 scholars in grades 6-8. Our hands‑on curriculum inspires achievement through active learning, character growth, and teamwork.
Position Overview:
This full‑time position has two components:
- As the in‑house guest teacher, you will teach classes when a teacher is absent, following lesson plans left by the classroom teacher. Over the course of the year, you will work with all subject areas and grade levels and will become familiar with every student in the school.
- As the guest teacher coordinator, you will coordinate the overall class coverage schedule, including determining the schedule of our pool of per‑diem guest teachers when multiple teachers are absent.

The majority of our in‑house guest teachers have gone on to be full classroom teachers at McAuliffe.
The full‑time position is 40 hours per week. Specific working hours are 7:30 a.m. – 2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. Guest teachers who wish to pursue a long‑term career in education are strongly encouraged to attend professional development from 2:45 – 4:15 on Tuesdays. The role is a full salaried position and includes paid vacation, holidays, and summer vacation. Benefits are available.
Responsibilities / Expectations- Carry out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.
- Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of the objectives indicated in the lesson plan.
- Keep notes for the absent teacher and leave student work and other materials in an organized way.
- May perform other duties as assigned, such as lunch/recess duty, assist in a schedule of classes, or help out with administrative tasks.
- Serve as the primary point of communication for per‑diem guest teachers and coordinate their schedules, with support from school leaders as needed.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Flexible and easily adaptable, comfortable working with students at all grade levels, and able to provide differentiated instruction and support in multiple classroom environments.
- Interest in building your teaching skills.
- Strong communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Enjoys middle‑school age students.
- Strong behavior‑management skills, including a balance of firmness, warmth, and humor.
- Ability to “think on your feet” and have fun doing it.
- Desire to connect with a community of educators who may want to hire you as a teacher in the future.
- At least 1 year of relevant experience preferred.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
Applicants must complete state‑mandated fingerprinting. In the spirit of pay transparency, the base salary range for this position is $40,929 – $57,128. If hired, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, and/or experience. The range reflects applicants with one year experience up to multiple years of experience.
