Department DescriptionThe MA Bio-Campus is home to Sanofi’s digital facility which won ISPE’s Facility of the Future and Facility of the Year 2020. The Manufacturing Systems & Automation group is responsible for executing Sanofi’s Digital Strategy to deliver innovative solutions focused on Digital 4.0. The group designs, implements, supports, and maintains digital systems aligned with site and company goals, ensuring stable, qualified, and highly available computing infrastructure and digital software applications.

Key ResponsibilitiesThis position is responsible for providing automation expertise for small to medium projects, including continuous improvement and retrofit. The engineer will support and troubleshoot automation systems across multiple manufacturing facilities.
- Provide technical solutions to process automation design challenges.
- Ensure automation equipment availability to support operations schedules.
- Manage small departmental projects, implementing controls, approvals, and validation requirements.
- Integrate systems and data from skid-level systems, analytical equipment, and process/building control systems.
- Develop robust solutions with minimal downtime and ensure data integrity.
- Contribute to automation standards development.
- Provide leadership and direction to junior team members.
- Ensure timely issue escalation to senior management and cross-functional support teams.
- Partner with manufacturing, quality, and operational excellence teams to resolve process issues and drive continuous improvement.
- Comply with Sanofi requirements for training and safety programs.
- Ensure inspection readiness of assigned areas and oversee investigations.
- Close all deviations and CAPAs in a timely manner.
- Maintain compliance and inspection-ready automation documentation.
- Participate in external regulator inspections.
- Adhere to Genzyme’s Safety Program and OSHA requirements.
- Collaborate with inter‑department and cross‑functional teams to lead timely changes.
- Partner with manufacturing to troubleshoot and resolve process issues.
- Drive process improvements through Kaizen, Kanban, 5S, and VSM.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or related technological field and 2+ years of automation experience in life sciences.
- Master’s degree with 1+ year of automation experience in life sciences (preferred).
- Direct experience with regulated environments (cGMP, OSHA, EPA).
- Experience with DeltaV, Ignition, Werum PAS‑X, PI, and similar systems.
- Proficiency with SCADA/PLC systems such as Rockwell Factory Talk/RSLogix or Honeywell.
- Understanding of network infrastructure and validation.
- Experience in chemical, pharmaceutical, food, or other process industries.
- Electrical or Chemical Engineering background.
- Experience establishing safe practices in a cGMP environment.
- Knowledge of virtual environments (VMWare, Hyper‑V).
- Strong organizational and independent work skills.
- Proven technical and analytical problem‑solving abilities.
- Support manufacturing operations on a rotating on‑call 24/7 basis.
- Work in an industrial manufacturing environment, including gowning.
