Job Summary

Shields Health is seeking a per diem Physician Assistant to support our MRI services at our Brighton, Dedham, Framingham, Brockton, and North Dartmouth, Massachusetts locations. The Physician Assistant will work collaboratively with supervising radiologists, MRI technologists, and other members of the clinical team to provide safe, high-quality patient care associated with MRI diagnostic services. Primary responsibilities include performing arthrogram procedures, administering contrast agents, assessing and preparing patients for procedures, obtaining informed consent, and providing pre- and post-procedure care.

The PA will practice in accordance with Massachusetts laws and regulations, applicable physician supervision and practice guidelines, Shields Health policies, and site-specific clinical privileges. This will be a per-diem opportunity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates the clinical knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe, compassionate, and patient-centered care.
  • Performs patient assessments, including review of relevant medical history, allergies, medications, laboratory results, and contraindications prior to procedures or contrast administration.
  • Verifies and reviews referring clinician orders and relevant clinical information prior to performing a procedure.
  • Performs arthrograms and associated image-guided procedures within the PA's approved scope of practice, demonstrated competency, and site-specific privileges.
  • Administers contrast media and other medications as appropriate and in accordance with applicable laws, clinical protocols, physician-delegated authority, and Shields Health policies.
  • Obtains and documents informed consent for procedures.
  • Provides appropriate pre-procedure and post-procedure assessment, education, instructions, and follow-up.
  • Monitors patients before, during, and after procedures and recognizes and responds appropriately to adverse reactions, complications, and medical emergencies.
  • Collaborates with supervising radiologists and MRI technologists regarding patient-specific clinical concerns and procedural needs.
  • Documents patient assessments, procedures, medications, contrast administration, and other required clinical information accurately and completely in the appropriate medical record systems.
  • Maintains compliance with infection prevention, medication safety, contrast safety, radiation safety, patient identification, and other applicable clinical standards.
  • Ensures appropriate communication and escalation to the supervising radiologist when clinical findings, patient condition, or procedural concerns require physician evaluation.
  • Maintains required competencies, credentials, continuing education, and site-specific privileges.
  • Travels between designated Shields MRI locations based on operational and patient-care needs.
  • Performs other related clinical duties within the Physician Assistant's authorized scope of practice as assigned.
Education, Licensure, and Certification Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or higher as required for Massachusetts Physician Assistant licensure.
  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant educational program.
  • Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current, unrestricted Physician Assistant license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred or required based on Shields Health policy.
  • Must meet all Shields Health credentialing and privileging requirements applicable to the position.
  • For fluoroscopy-guided arthrograms or other fluoroscopic procedures: must meet Massachusetts requirements for Physician Assistants authorized to operate fluoroscopic X-ray systems and perform fluoroscopic procedures, or successfully complete required training, examination, and authorization prior to independently performing such procedures.
  • Previous experience performing arthrograms and image-guided procedures strongly preferred.
