The shop's Working Lead position leads the group of mechanics within the shop, assuring equipment is fixed correctly and in a timely manner. They assist the shop supervisor in day-to-day operations, including data entry and executing work schedules. They also assist in maintaining a safe and effective work environment. They fill in for the shop supervisor in the supervisor's absence, and they also run the night shift during winter events.
The working lead position is crucial in achieving shop and operational demands.
Candidates with a current CDL and endorsements required by the district, will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements required by the district and will then earn an additional $1 per hour. CDL training provided onsite by certified INDOT staff.
INDOT also provides a generous Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1500 per year for full‑time Mechanic positions for the purchase, replacement and repair of tools required for maintenance and repair activities related to INDOT’s fleet of transportation vehicles, snow and ice management equipment, road maintenance equipment and all other fleet items.
LocationThis position is located in INDOT’s Frankfort Sub District.
Pay RateThis position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 but may be commensurate with education and work experience.
A Day in the LifeThe essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Rebuild, replace, and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy‑duty trucks, and heavy equipment (e.g., exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train, mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air, and hydraulic brakes).
- Performs minor repairs or other related mechanical work (e.g., adjusts valves; changes and repairs all types of tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors; repairs or replaces hydraulic components.
- Install snowplow blades and make repairs on damaged plow assemblies.
- Perform minor body repair work.
- Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed on equipment and orders and/or pick up parts.
- Service and repair of highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal.
- Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them.
- Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage.
- Perform winter operations duties including snow and ice removal.
- Operate snowplow, tow truck, or other equipment; repair mowers and sharpens blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintain daily records of same.
- Perform service calls on the roadside when equipment is disabled.
- Attend appropriate training school, safety meetings, mechanic meetings, or related meetings.
- Order and/or pick up parts when required by the supervisor.
- Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis.
- Coordinates work assigned by the Shop Foreman and reports problems as needed.
