The Chief Deputy Clerk is a full-time, on-site role based in Frankfort, KY, responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Clerk’s Office for the Kentucky Court of Appeals. This role manages case processing workflows, including the filing, docketing, and tracking of appeals, motions, and related court documents in accordance with court rules and procedures. The Chief Deputy Clerk supervises and mentors clerk staff, assigns and reviews work, and helps establish and maintain office procedures that promote efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.
The position coordinates with judges, attorneys, court administrators, and the public to provide information on court processes while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism. The Chief Deputy Clerk also assists with administrative reporting, technology or case management system updates, and process improvements to support the Court’s mission and operational goals.
- Strong administrative and organizational skills, including experience managing high-volume documentation, scheduling, and workflow coordination in a legal, government, or similarly structured environment.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities, with experience directing staff, setting priorities, providing feedback, and fostering a collaborative, service-oriented work culture.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to draft clear correspondence, instructions, and reports, and to interact professionally with judges, attorneys, staff, and the public.
- Proficiency with office and case management software, electronic filing systems, and standard productivity tools (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, databases); ability to adapt to new court technology.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy, especially in handling legal records, deadlines, and sensitive information, with a careful approach to confidentiality and data integrity.
- Ability to interpret and apply rules, policies, and procedures, preferably within a court, legal, or regulatory setting, and to help train staff on compliance requirements.
- Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills, including the capacity to prioritize tasks, manage competing deadlines, and handle issues calmly in a fast-paced environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in public administration, legal studies, business, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience; prior experience in a court, clerk’s office, or legal environment is strongly
