DescriptionThe Legislative Research Commission is accepting applications for the position of Committee Assistant for the Health Services Committee. This position is nonpartisan in nature and requires the ability to work with neutrality in a politically charged environment.
The Legislative Research Commission provides staff support to the Kentucky General Assembly. The agency offers unique opportunities to people seeking fulfilling, challenging, and rewarding careers. This is a permanent, full-time position with benefits including health and life insurance; retirement plan; and paid holidays, vacation, and sick days. Compensatory time is awarded on an hour-for-hour basis with prior approval.
Job Duties- Helps with committee meeting logistics, prepares and sends committee communications and correspondence, and coordinates and distributes materials.
- Assists committee staff and members before and during committee meetings.
- Calls roll during meetings, and records and reports committee actions.
- Prepares minutes of committee meetings and timely distributes.
- Proofreads documents for proper format, accuracy, and style.
- Answers routine questions from staff and non-staff about office or committee procedures.
- Communicates with supervisor to learn about agency policies and procedures.
- Works when requested with other committees or task forces during interim or session.
- Answers telephone and greets and otherwise assists guests.
- Maintains bill logs and other information during the session and interim.
- Attends trainings as needed or directed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills And Abilities
- Ability to accomplish tasks when receiving detailed instructions and working under close supervision.
- Basic computer skills with knowledge of Windows Office products, or demonstrated ability to learn Windows Office products.
- Knowledge of basic office procedures, along with the ability to follow writing styles.
- Knowledge of standard English, including grammar, spelling, word usage, and punctuation.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to assist other committees and work with other projects.
- Ability to meet short deadlines.
- Ability to work in a team environment and willingness to work with other agencies, legislators, and the public.
- Ability to work on assignments that are routine in nature, requiring limited exercise of independent judgement.
- Possess moderate understanding of general aspects of the job.
- Ability to work in a nonpartisan manner with legislators, partisan staff, and co-workers.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR
SKILLS:
No direct experience is needed. Limited relevant business experience and business knowledge, or equivalent academic training may be preferred.
