Adjunct Instructor of Applied Instrument – Low Brass (Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba)
Kentucky State University invites applications for the position of Adjunct Instructor of Applied Instrument – Low Brass (Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba). The instructor will provide individualized applied instruction to students on low brass instruments. The role supports student success through applied study, ensemble preparation, and performance development consistent with the mission and standards of the Department of Music and the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
Essential Job Functions:
- Provide weekly one-on-one applied lessons in low brass instruments, focusing on tone, range, technique, and musical interpretation.
- Prepare students for juries, recitals, ensemble auditions, and departmental performance requirements.
- Develop and maintain lesson plans, syllabi, and assessment criteria in alignment with NASM and departmental standards.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and grades according to University policy.
- Participate in semester-end juries and evaluations as requested by the Department of Music.
- Foster a supportive, inclusive learning environment that promotes student artistic and academic growth.
- Communicate effectively and collaborate with the Chair and Coordinator to ensure instructional quality and consistency.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required:
- Demonstrated excellence in low brass performance and pedagogy.
- Strong commitment to undergraduate music education and individualized student instruction.
- Ability to engage and motivate diverse learners using effective instructional strategies.
- Competence with instructional technology and learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard).
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Qualifications:
- A Master's degree in the teaching discipline, or
- A Master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field.
- Record of successful applied teaching at the college or secondary level preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed primarily on campus in instructional studios and performance spaces.
- Requires availability for weekly lessons, student juries, and departmental events as assigned.
- This is a temporary, part-time exempt position; no benefits are associated with adjunct appointments.
