Adjunct Instructor of Applied Instrument – Percussion
Kentucky State University invites applications for the position of Adjunct Instructor of Applied Instrument – Percussion. The instructor will provide individualized applied instruction to students in percussion, including concert percussion, drum set, and auxiliary instruments. The role supports student success through applied study, ensemble preparation, and performance development consistent with the mission and standards of the Department of Music and the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
Essential Job Functions:- Provide weekly one-on-one applied percussion lessons, emphasizing technique, rhythmic accuracy, musicianship, and stylistic versatility.
- Prepare students for juries, recitals, ensemble auditions, and departmental performance requirements.
- Create and maintain syllabi, instructional materials, and assessment rubrics that align with NASM and departmental standards.
- Maintain attendance, grades, and other required documentation in accordance with University policy.
- Participate in performance juries and evaluation of student learning outcomes.
- Promote a positive, inclusive, student-centered learning environment.
- Communicate and collaborate with the Coordinator and Chair to ensure alignment of instructional expectations.
Required:
- Demonstrated excellence in percussion performance and pedagogy across multiple performance areas (e.g., mallets, timpani, drum set, auxiliary percussion).
- Strong commitment to undergraduate music education and student artistic development.
- Ability to engage and motivate diverse students using inclusive instructional practices.
- Competence with learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard) and instructional technology.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Performs other related duties as assigned in support of the academic program and institutional mission.
To qualify as an adjunct instructor at Kentucky State University, the individual must meet:
- A Master's degree in the teaching discipline, or
- A Master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field.
- Record of successful applied teaching at the college or secondary level preferred.
- Work is performed primarily on campus in instructional studios and performance spaces.
- Requires availability for weekly lessons, student juries, and departmental events as assigned.
- This is a temporary, part-time exempt position; no benefits are associated with adjunct appointments.
