Basic Function: Performs duties required by District, State, and Federal Regulations of special education teachers.

• Has a prepared lesson plan that is sufficient for instructing the lesson.
• Exercises proper care of materials and equipment.
• Communicates needs of the classroom to the proper personnel.
• Arrives for work at the assigned hour and does not leave before the assigned time.
• Communicates appropriately and effectively with other staff members, parents, students, and administration.
• Accepts assistance, advice, and guidance from people responsible for supervising his/her performance, and makes a concerted effort toward improving or refining skills.
• Shares ideas, plans, materials, and facilities.
• Alert to district’s, school’s, and his/her own goals and priorities and seeks professional development appropriate to these needs.
• Keeps information obtained in the course of professional service confidential, unless disclosure serves a professional purpose or is required by law.
• In his/her association with others, respects the rights, feelings, and differences among individuals and communicates directly when needed.
• Complies with state and local restrictions on controlled substances, tobacco, alcohol, and dress while exercising contractual responsibilities.
• Does not verbally or physically harass students.
• Does not use profanity in the presence of students.
• Does not have any sexual contact with students.
• Diagnoses the learning needs of each student and prescribes individual IEPs to meet those needs.
• Acts as a resource person with other teachers and parents to promote understanding of special education student needs and to provide assistance in working with handicapped students.
• Keeps data to document student change.
• Familiar with and implements due process and procedures, keeping proper documentation.
• Assimilates and applies suggestions from related service personnel.

• Employs classroom management techniques that result in an atmosphere for teaching/learning in which students know what they are expected to do.

• The teacher begins the class promptly.
• The teacher communicates the behaviors expected of students; evidence shows expected behaviors have been communicated.
• Students exhibit classroom behaviors allowing maximum on‑task behavior from all participants.
• Inappropriate behaviors receive immediate and appropriate teacher intervention.

• The teacher chooses appropriate materials and/or equipment for teaching a lesson.
• The teacher handles materials and equipment efficiently in the classroom setting.

Plan effectively with respect to establishing teaching strategies that allow attainment of the lesson’s behavioral objectives.
