DescriptionThe mission of the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) is to improve the quality of life for all Kentuckians by protecting our land, air, and water resources by utilizing our natural resources in an environmentally conscientious manner. We do this by helping families connect with nature and preserving the Commonwealth’s natural heritage; and by supporting innovative, resilient, and sustainable energy solutions that together bring economic benefit to the commonwealth.
The Division of Abandoned Mine Lands was authorized by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation act of 1977 and is responsible for reclaiming problems from abandoned mine lands prior to 1982 that have no continuing responsibility for reclamation. The Division administers several programs in support of mine reclamation projects and economic revitalization of the Kentucky coalfields. The main office is located in Frankfort, with field offices in Prestonsburg, Hazard, London, and Madisonville.
By joining the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands Eastern Region Branch Design East Section as an Environmental Engineer I in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to conduct engineering design and construction activities for AML projects and related field activities.
Responsibilities- Visit sites for potential design to assess the nature and severity of the eligible issues for reclamation.
- Design projects using engineering software, including AutoCAD, Global Mapper, and other GIS and Engineering software.
- Prepare documentation for the bid package needed for construction.
- Conduct surveying activities as needed using advanced survey equipment and collaborate with the UAV section to collect data to support design and construction activities.
- Meet with landowners and contractors over the course of the design and construction process.
- Licensed as a professional engineer (PE) by the Kentucky Board of Engineers.
- Experience with AutoCAD and Carlson CAD software packages.
- Experience using survey equipment and data, including data collected by UAV.
- Engineering experience in environmental, mining, or civil fields.
- Desire to learn and use new and advanced technology and software to improve the efficiency and quality of work done to further the mission of AML and the Energy and Environment Cabinet.

Must be licensed as a professional engineer by the Kentucky Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Working ConditionsWork is typically performed in an office setting. Travel throughout the state may be required.
Probationary PeriodThis job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
