Environmental Scientist II

Location: 300 Sower Boulevard, Frankfort, KY 40601 USA

Employment Type: EXECUTIVE BRANCH | FULL TIME | Eligible for overtime pay | 18A | 37.5 hr/week

Salary: $3,907.04 - $5,401.34 per month

Agency: Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, Department for Environmental Protection

We are looking for an Environmental Scientist to work in the Municipal Planning Section in Franklin County within the Division of Water, Water Infrastructure Branch. The role focuses on water utility planning and environmental compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and evaluate environmental, mining, natural resource, and/or energy programs, agency guidelines, and procedures related to water utility planning; provide technical and non-technical assistance to a wide audience.
  • Oversee, determine, develop, and implement environmental plans or projects for regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct the financial and managerial portion of the Drinking Water Sanitary Survey.
  • Assess drinking water systems’ managerial and financial capacity and assist systems in maintaining or regaining capacity.
  • Participate in the State Revolving Fund process.
Desired Experience & Skills
  • Experience with the Safe Drinking Water Act and conducting Drinking Water Sanitary Surveys.
  • Experience with the State Revolving Fund or other federal/state funding programs.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft software and Geographic Information System tools.
  • Experience with Environmental Impact reviews.
  • Clear communication and strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate technical and non-technical subjects to a wide audience.
Minimum Requirements
  • Education: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a natural, biological, or physical science; or a bachelor’s degree supplemented by 20 semester hours in such a science.
  • Experience: One year in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area.
  • Substitution: Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science may substitute for the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Substitution: Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area may substitute for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
Licensure & Other Requirements

Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel statewide. Telecommuting may be authorized at the discretion of the agency.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily in an office setting with frequent travel. The role may require exposure to adverse weather, wildlife, waterborne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal, and hazards from electro‑fishing equipment. Safety procedures must be followed.
