Job DescriptionOn site. Ability to test Materials: must have TGA, DSC. Day will be half in the lab testing materials and the other half in materials assessment.
Education:
BS or MS (preferred) + professional work experience.
The R&D Scientist II reports directly to the R&D staff engineer and is responsible for delivering technical excellence in the area of applied material/chemical/biological sciences within the Specimen Management (SM) Business Unit R&D organization. The R&D Scientist II will drive activities supporting the development, verification, and continued performance of specimen management solutions for clinical diagnostic markets. Specific areas of focus may include: participating in cross‑functional team discussions and providing functional inputs;
preparing samples/prototypes for internal or external analysis; developing and executing test protocols and documenting results with guidance from manager or senior personnel; conducting root‑cause analysis under supervision for product development and sustaining engineering activities; maintaining laboratory equipment and facilities.
- Represents the R&D function as an extended team member in support of large technology and product development programs.
- Design and execute experiments that further the development, verification, and evidence generation efforts across all assigned programs and projects.
- Document and build technical knowledge within assigned business areas; with guidance, explore and recommend solution concepts and principles when applicable.
- Drive aspects of product development work streams under guidance including but not limited to requirements management, design verification, and design transfer to manufacturing for applicable assignments.
- Ensure program success by working cross‑functionally with R&D‑Engineering, Marketing, Medical Affairs, Manufacturing, Quality and Regulatory Affairs.
- Participate in intellectual property growth; submit patent applications and invention disclosure records.
- Work under general and specific direction from manager and senior personnel to determine or develop potential approaches to solutions.
- Adhere to good laboratory practices, all relevant lab operational procedures, and actively participate in maintaining the setting and functionality of SM R&D laboratories and equipment.
- Mentor and train junior team members and foster a collaborative work environment.
- Travel as required to conferences, manufacturing sites, customer visits, etc.
- Expected to be conversant in specific core competency areas and work to build skills in these areas (dependent on specific role/requirements within the R&D SM organization; e.g., biological sciences would include coagulation, clinical chemistry, hematology, etc., material sciences would include FTIR, TGA, DSC, etc.).
- Experience with handling clinical specimens (particularly human blood) is desired; blood‑borne pathogen safety training is necessary and will be provided.
- Must be proficient with MS Office, and experience with statistical analysis tools is desired.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills. Must be comfortable with complex team matrices.
- Strong learning agility to facilitate strengthening core competency areas.
- Self‑motivated with a strong sense of urgency and willing to take hands‑on work.
B.S. or M.S. degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Cell/Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related disciplines.
