- The Dental Hygienist provides patient care and basic dental hygiene prophylaxis care
- Review patient health and dental history forms and update as necessary
- Take blood pressure and conduct oral cancer screening
- Expose necessary digital radiographs
- Utilize intraoral camera for patient education
- Chart decay, disease diagnosis and treatment
- Visually examine and palpate for signs of disease (intra and extra-oral), and perform TMJ exam
- Periodontal examination and documentation of gingival description
- Perform thorough and gentle prophylaxis
- Apply cavity-preventive agents such as fluorides and sealants
- Remove calculus, plaque, and stain
- Administer local anesthetic agents, if certified
- Oral Hygiene Instruction (OHI) with self-care tools
- Educate patients on good oral health, nutrition, proper hygiene, and oral disease
- Discuss the etiology of oral disease, contributing factors, and relationship to systemic disease (e.g., heart disease, pregnancy, diabetes)
- Educate and advise patients with educational reading materials
- Perform other tasks assigned by the dentist, hygiene director and team leader
