Emergency Room Registered Nurse

This position is not a typical ER RN role. ER RN that can board patients and float to Medical Surgical and Critical Care Units as needed. Candidates must have previous experience boarding patients in the ER. Floating to Medical Surgical and Critical Care Units will be required in the capacity of an ER RN. Every third weekend of work is required.

Experience with Cerner is necessary for consideration. The ER has 26 beds and 3 trauma bays. There is a treatment area with 4 beds for fast track patients. There is no separate triage area, and travelers will triage patients when in the department. Patients in the ER are cared for by ER nurses, including ER holds, which are intermixed within the ER.

There is a designated lower ligature risk room with a camera for patients needing psych/seclusion. In-house security is available 24/7, with law enforcement officers located just outside the emergency department. The average number of patients per day is approximately 60. The staff-to-patient ratio is 1 to 4. Required certifications include BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, with preference given to TNCC and ENPC.

Common diagnoses and types of patients include abdominal pain, altered mental status, STEMI (sent out), stroke (some kept and some sent), and chest pain. Patient age ranges from pediatric to geriatric and includes conditions like COVID-19, shortness of breath, and moderate sedation. Experience with IVs and EKG rhythm interpretation is essential. The team includes MDs, DOs, PAs, and NPs for physician support.

Charge nurses are available 24/7 and take patients. House supervisors work from 6 PM to 6 AM on weekdays, and 24/7 on holidays and weekends. Support staff includes medics, PCTs, and sitters. Respiratory therapy is on-site 24/7 and assists with breathing treatments, ABGs, and intubation as needed. Nurses also monitor and read telemetry strips. Radiology staff typically manage transport for X-rays or CT scans;

for critical cases, the nurse will accompany the patient. Nursing staff perform the majority of blood draws, with lab support available. Shifts are 12 hours from 7 AM to 7 PM, 11 AM to 11 PM, or 3 PM to 3 AM. The staff self-schedules, and the manager balances the schedule. Flexibility is required for holiday work as needed. There is no call or standby requirement.

Navy blue scrubs are the dress code, with specific guidelines regarding piercings and tattoos. Unit orientation consists of 1-2 shifts with a preceptor. Request for time off must be submitted upfront. Candidates must be fully committed to fulfilling the contract and punctuality is essential. The cancellation policy allows for 2 shifts per 13-week contract. Charting is done through Cerner. A BSN is not required.

This is a Trauma Level 3 care setting in acute nursing.
