Job DescriptionPrimary Job Goal: To provide each at‑risk student with an individually‑tailored help, counsel, and learning experience he or she needs to progress toward behavioral and educational goals designed with his or her limitations in mind; to teach basic and/or advanced social, academic, and practical‑living skills using a variety of techniques, materials, and equipment to initiate and reinforce behavioral change.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of modern public school behavior modification and the ability to apply them to the needs of the alternative school setting; knowledge of the nature and effects of at‑risk conditions; knowledge of current research and theory practices in behavior and character education; ability to utilize multimedia and computer technology; ability to monitor students and check work;
clear oral and written communication; ability to develop effective working relationships; flexibility to adjust programs; physical strength and dexterity for restraint and physical education when required.
- Maintains an orderly learning atmosphere and keeps the Principal fully informed of behavior unit activities.
- Participates in the behavior improvement process for student reentry into the regular classroom.
- Determines specific behavior problems, skill deficiencies, and social adjustment difficulties and initiates appropriate educational programs.
- Assists in compiling case history data where additional intervention is needed.
- Collaborates with staff and parents to develop behavior plans.
- Provides instruction in personal management, community, school, domestic, and vocational domains.
- Cooperates with community‑based instruction and on‑site physical education training for secondary students.
- Facilitates friendships and relationships to help students with moderate to severe behavior problems become productive members of their classes.
- Utilizes instructional materials and multimedia to enhance learning.
- Establishes and maintains standards of individual student behavior within district policies.
- Counsels students to identify and address academic and social at‑risk behaviors.
- Maintains professional competence through development activities provided by the district and self‑selected growth activities.
- Assists in selecting books, software, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Works cooperatively with administration, teachers, and support personnel to plan school goals and objectives.
- Collaborates with other professionals to coordinate instructional activities.
- Works with classroom teachers to interpret behavior patterns and assist with regular class assignments.
- Develops individual programs with teachers and administration as needed.
- Modifies class activities to maintain behavior of students with moderate to severe problems.
- Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss progress and program interpretation.
- Remains available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside instructional time when reasonable.
- Creates a safe, disciplined, and effective classroom environment with functional displays and learning centers.
- Ensures all materials are in good condition and accessible to students.
- Takes precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
- Requests and maintains needed equipment and supplies in consultation with the Principal.
- Maintains proper inventories of non‑expendable school supplies and materials.
- Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules and policies.
- Shares duties and supervises pupils in out‑of‑classroom activities.
- Follows the chain of command for grievances and suggestions for improvement.
- Attends faculty meetings, parent conferences, and serves on staff/district committees.
- Supports school wide student activities, social events, and fund‑raising activities when applicable.
- Maintains the highest professional standards in personal conduct.
- Performs related duties as assigned by the Principal or Superintendent.
Work involves sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, and lifting. Lifting ranges from 0–10 lbs, 11–15 lbs, 16–30 lbs, and over 31 lbs. Hand manipulation includes repetitive movements, simple and power grasping, pushing and pulling, and fine manipulation. The job may require reaching or working at shoulder level, using foot controls, and performing repetitive foot movements. Exposure to fumes or airborne particles is minimal.
