Job DescriptionQualifications:
- Passing scores on the Kentucky Para educator Assessment OR equivalent of an Associate’s Degree or above.
- Responsible and varied experience working with children.
- Possess necessary literacy and/or mathematics skills to fulfill performance responsibilities.
- Good health as evidenced by a physical exam.

Primary Job Goal:
To work closely with students with disabilities to provide instructional, physical, and emotional support, enabling them to benefit from the school's special education programs.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of child growth and development, child instructional procedures, and public school policies.
- Understanding of subject matter reinforcement practices and ability to implement teachers’ instructional plans.
- Patience, ability to work with children, young adults, and faculty.
- Assist in implementing instructional programs, including personal hygiene tasks, and participate in monitoring student behavior. Requires completion of Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) course and annual updates.
- Clear communication orally and in writing; follow written and oral instructions.
- Develop effective working relationships with the school community.
- Ability to monitor students and check work in varied classroom settings.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Participate in daily and long‑range lesson and classroom activity planning.
- Confers with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
- Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in oral communication and curriculum tasks.
- Performs errands and tasks for students such as sharpening pencils, carrying lunch trays.
- Guides students in working/playing harmoniously with peers.
- Maintains individual records and prepares due process folders for newly enrolled special education students.
- Operates and cares for classroom instructional equipment; sets up for presentations.
- Assists supervision of students in lunchroom, classroom, playground, field trip, and other activities; accompanies students to trips.
- Types, files, duplicates papers, tests, and other materials.
- Assists teacher in preparing instructional materials requested.
- Assists in administering, scoring, recording achievement and diagnostic tests; proctor tests and examinations; assists with K‑Prep assessment.
- Under supervision of special education teacher, performs remedial instructions or tasks to reinforce learning with small groups.
- Provides individual tutoring.
- Participates in instructional teams, remediation teams, and ARC as requested.
- Help keeps bulletin boards and other displays current.
- Assists teacher in maintaining neat work and study areas.
- Assists students with physical tasks such as outerwear changes, moving rooms, wash‑ups, and toilet routines.
- Instructs and assists with proper toilet training and hygiene.
- When applicable, changes diapers, lifts students, administers medication, and performs medical procedures under teacher supervision.
- Assists with physical therapy under certified therapist care when applicable.
- Administers health services, including medication administration and maintenance of medical equipment.
- Assists students at workplace in the community when applicable.
- Helps inventory classroom supplies and equipment.
- Monitors classroom when teacher is absent for brief periods.
- Maintains high ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
- Observes and assists students experiencing difficulties, including de‑escalation techniques and restraints if trained; certified in NCI if required.
- Assists with meal times and cleaning eating area when applicable.
- Assists in storing and retrieving classroom materials.
- Participates in professional development with assigned teacher.
- Establishes supportive relationships with students.
