Job Description Qualifications
  • Passing scores on the Kentucky Para educator Assessment or the equivalent of an Associate’s Degree or above; responsible and varied experience working with children; possess necessary literacy and/or mathematics skills; good health as evidenced by a physical exam.

Primary Job Goal

To work closely with one or a few students with disabilities on a regular basis in an effort to provide them with instructional and/or physical help and emotional support needed to gain full benefits from the school's special education programs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Good knowledge of child growth and development; knowledge of para educator instructional procedures and practices as they relate to special needs children; knowledge of instructional goals and policies of public schools; knowledge of subject matter reinforcement practices for assigned classes.
  • Ability to implement teachers’ instructional plans in the field; patience and an ability to work effectively with children, young adults, and faculty.
  • Ability to assist in the implementation of an instructional program, including lifting, feeding, and changing of personal hygiene items; participation in monitoring and ensuring appropriate student behavior; completion of the Non‑violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) Course and maintenance of certification as required.
  • Clear and concise communication, both oral and written; ability to follow written and oral instructions and perform all required tasks.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with the entire school community; mobility to monitor students and check work in classrooms with varied seating and desk organization.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Participates in daily and long‑range lesson and classroom activity planning.
  • Confers with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
  • Reads to students, listens as students read, and participates in oral communication and curriculum tasks.
  • Performs simple errands and tasks for students such as sharpening pencils and carrying lunch trays.
  • Guides students in working/playing harmoniously with peers.
  • Helps maintain individual records, prepares due‑process folders for new students.
  • Operates and cares for classroom equipment; sets up equipment for presentations.
  • Assists with student supervision in lunchroom, classroom, playground, field trips, and other activities; accompanies students to the office, media center, etc.
  • Types, files, and duplicates papers, tests, and other materials.
  • Assists teachers in preparing instructional materials.
  • Assists in administering, scoring, and recording tests; proctors examinations; assists with K‑PREP assessment.
  • Under teachers’ supervision, provides remedial instruction or tasks to reinforce learning for small groups.
  • Provides tutoring to individual students.
  • Participates in instructional teams, remediation teams, and the ARC as requested.
  • Maintains bulletin boards and classroom displays.
  • Maintains neat work and study areas.
  • Assists students with physical tasks such as dressing, moving rooms, and, when applicable, wash‑ups and toilet routines.
  • Instructs students in proper toilet training and hygiene; changes diapers, lifts students, and administers medication under supervision when required.
  • Performs physical therapy when directed by a certified therapist.
  • Administers health services—including medication and the use of medical equipment—when necessary.
  • Assists students at community work sites.
  • Helps inventory supplies and equipment.
  • Monitors classrooms as directed by the Principal when teachers are absent.
  • Maintains ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
  • Uses de‑escalation techniques and restraints when trained and required by NCI certification.
