Special Education Assistant (middle school)

The Special Education Assistant will work closely with one or a few special needs students on a regular basis to provide them with the academic, social, emotional and behavioral support needed to gain the full benefits of their educational placement under the direction of the supervising teacher(s).
Responsibilities- Work under the direction of the supervising Special Educator to implement IEP services.
- Help collect and/or prepare materials to support learning for target students. The teacher will plan all lessons and be responsible for instruction.
- Provide reinforcement to students in academic areas as directed by supervisor.
- Implement behavior plans as directed by supervisor.
- Collect data as directed by supervisor.
- Help plan scheduling for meeting the needs of students.
- Communicate regularly with teachers about student’s needs and progress.
- Aid teacher, when requested, in communication between home and school.
- Treat all information about the school, teachers, children and their families as strictly confidential.
- Participate in on-going staff development.
- Celebrate student effort and growth.
- High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Successful experience working with children.
- Experience with ABA methodology and/or prior experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder preferred.
- Possesses a strong belief that all students can learn and be successful in school.
- Demonstrates a mindset that focuses on assets & growth, as opposed to deficits.
- Demonstrated ability to take direction.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
- Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies; ability to operate computers and related software.
- While performing the duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk or stand, and may be required to offer physical assistance such as adaptive physical education activities.
- At least 1 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
- High School/Trade School degree preferred.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
