General DescriptionThe Franklin Public Schools, a Prek-12 district, is seeking a skilled and experienced TVI to provide direct instructional services and consultative support for students in grades Pre‑K to age 22 who have visual impairments. Operating primarily as an itinerant teacher, the TVI works alongside general education teachers, families, and multidisciplinary teams to adapt environments, formulate Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and teach specialized skills.
KeyDuties and Responsibilities Teaching the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC)
- Compensatory
Skills:
Instruction in reading and writing Unified English Braille (UEB), nemeth code (math braille), and tactile graphics. - Assistive Technology:
Training students to use screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA), refreshable braille displays, magnifiers, screen‑magnification software, and dictation tools. - Independent Living & Sensory Efficiency:
Teaching non‑visual or low‑vision techniques for daily tasks, concept development, and maximizing auditory or tactile senses.
- Curriculum Adaptation:
Collaborate with general education teachers to modify lessons and ensure all worksheets, textbooks, and digital tools are translated into accessible formats ahead of time. - Team Liaison:
Serve as a core member of the IEP team; write measurable vision‑specific goals, track quarterly progress, and attend annual review meetings and re‑evaluation meetings. - Staff & Family Training:
Conduct in‑service training for school staff, paraprofessionals, and parents regarding the student’s visual needs, fostering a classroom culture that promotes high expectations and independence.
- Administer Functional Vision Assessments (FVA) to evaluate how a student utilizes their remaining vision, and Learning Media Assessments (LMA) to determine the best literacy medium (e.g., braille, large print, digital text, or audio).
- Must have Massachusetts licensure as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired through the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education.
- Master’s Degree in Special Education with a focus on Visual Impairments.
- Proficiency in literary and contracted Braille, experience with mainstream assistive technologies (Apple/Windows accessibility features), and dedicated vision hardware/software.
- Experience in a public school setting.
- Able to take initiative and work independently.
- Must successfully pass Criminal Offender (CORI) background check and national fingerprinting screening (CHRI).
