ENG-111

Composition I

This course develops the student's ability to think clearly and write effectively. Classroom sessions focus on concept development, organization of ideas, and techniques for writing academic and rhetorical awareness essays, critical analysis of text, and process writing. Lab sessions reinforce skill development. Both formal and informal writing assignments, as well as mostly nonfiction readings, are incorporated throughout the course. Instruction in the following areas is emphasized in all sections: rhetorical awareness, critical thinking, proper use of MLA citations and formatting, introductory research skills, technology for writing, and correctness in grammar and mechanics.

Students must achieve a grade of C- or higher to meet the prerequisite for ENG-112. Offered every semester. This course fulfills a College Core requirement.

ENG-112 Composition II

This course is a continuation of the two-semester college writing requirement. The coursework continues to emphasize and develop critical thinking and argument in academic writing, and additionally requires independent research writing. The integration of visual elements into formal papers, MLA formatting and documentation, and editing strategies, are also taught and reinforced. Prerequisite: C- or better in ENG-111 or permission of the Dean for the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
