Adjunct Faculty - General Physics I (PHY-141)

Dean College's School of Liberal Arts and Sciences is looking for a dynamic, experienced, student‑centered educator to teach during the Fall 2026 semester. The College seeks adjunct faculty who focus on experiential learning and active engagement in their classrooms, creating a compelling and professional learning environment for students of diverse backgrounds.

We are seeking an adjunct instructor for PHY‑141:
General Physics I, a 4‑credit class that meets for a 2.5‑hour lecture each week and a 2‑hour lab. The adjunct pay rate for this course and lab is $5,500 ($1,100 per contact hour). The course is scheduled as a hybrid: lectures are held online synchronously twice a week, and the lab is in person once a week. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach and use Canvas at the minimum level established by the College.

A course charter with objectives and sample syllabi is provided by the Program Coordinator, and copies of previously run labs are made available.

Course Description for PHY‑141:
General Physics I. This course is a non‑calculus introduction to fundamental physics principles. Topics include vectors, Newton’s laws, energy, work, force, power, momentum, rotational motion, angular momentum, torque, and an introduction to thermodynamics, wave motion, and sound. The laboratory emphasizes application of physics principles and basic techniques in data collection and problem solving. Prerequisite: a grade of “C” or better in MTH 151 or a high‑math course.

Lab fee: $75. Offered on an as‑needed basis in the fall semester.

The course schedule is as follows:

• Lecture:
  Tuesdays and Thursdays, online synchronous 3:30 pm–4:45 pm
• Lab:
  Fridays, in person 2:00 pm–3:50 pm

Position responsibilities include:

• Deliver and assess course learning objectives and outcomes consistent with the course charter in person for the two assigned 75‑minute class meetings each week
• Hold laboratory sections that follow the assigned labs each week
• Direct students through writing lab reports or lab assignments
• Follow all lab safety protocols and require students to adhere to lab safety protocols
• Hold at least one office hour each week
• Be responsive and supportive of students’ learning concerns or questions
• Use Canvas to post course materials and assignment deadlines, post grades on the gradebook in Canvas and enter attendance on the Canvas attendance log
• Assess student learning in the classroom and lab

• Master’s Degree in Physics or a related field is required;
  PhD in a related discipline is preferred
• Experience teaching at the college level in person is preferred; experience teaching first and second‑year undergraduates is preferred
• Strong computer skills are required; experience using technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy is required
• Ability and willingness to be responsive and supportive to students through college online resources and digital tools is required
• Experience with or willingness to learn Canvas, our learning management system, and classroom media is required
• Expertise in learner‑centered teaching is required; experience and ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles, required
