POSITION
DESCRIPTION:
* The Intermediate School English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher will provide high-quality literacy instruction to students in 5th and 6th grades using evidence-based practices aligned with the Tennessee Academic Standards and the Science of Reading. The teacher will foster reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development, writing proficiency, and a lifelong love of literature. This role includes creating a welcoming, culturally responsive classroom environment and partnering with colleagues to ensure student success across all content areas.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Deliver rigorous, standard-aligned ELA instruction to support all domains of literacy (reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language).
* Use structured literacy and foundational skills instruction grounded in the Science of Reading.
* Develop and implement district adopted high quality instructional materials that address individual student needs and promote mastery of the Tennessee ELA Standards.
* Employ formative and summative assessments to measure student growth and guide instruction.
* Differentiate instruction for diverse learners, including students receiving Tier II/III RTI support, students with IEPs/504s, English Learners, and advanced learners.
* Incorporate culturally relevant texts and student voice in the curriculum.
* Create a classroom environment that fosters curiosity, student agency, academic discussion, and mutual respect.
* Collaborate with grade-level teams, interventionists, and instructional coaches to analyze data and align instructional strategies.
* Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), faculty meetings, district-wide PD, and ongoing coaching.
* Use district-supported digital tools and platforms (e.g., Google Workspace, LMS, reading diagnostics) to enhance instruction and communication.
* Maintain accurate student records, prepare progress reports, and communicate with families about student progress.
* Uphold district expectations related to behavior, classroom management, and the use of restorative practices.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, English, Literacy, or a related field (Master's preferred).
* Valid Tennessee Teaching License with appropriate endorsement for English Language Arts (K-5 endorsement qualifies; 6-12 or 7-12 English endorsement qualifies)
* Knowledge of Tennessee ELA Academic Standards and best practices in literacy instruction.
* Experience or training in Science of Reading, structured literacy, and universal screeners and progress monitoring tools (e.g., Aims Web, Acadience).
* Commitment to ongoing professional growth and the FSD mission of inclusive excellence.
* Previous successful teaching experience in upper elementary or middle grades preferred.
DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
* Ability to work as a team member in a dynamic, complex environment and organize time and workload effectively
* Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all levels of staff and vendors
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and vendors
* Ability to effectively perform job duties with minimum supervision
* Demonstrated problem solving and time management abilities
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
* Frequent sitting and standing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling and twisting
* Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching
* Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional physical restraint of students to control behavior (only after training completed)
* May work prolonged or irregular hours; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold and inclement weather), exposure to noise
* Work with frequent interruptions
