The Position We are hiring a Traffic and Transportation Engineer I or II.Under limited supervision supports the Director of Engineering and Traffic Engineer III in the collection, analysis and maintenance of traffic/transportation/ITS data; may be responsible for supervising staff members in the Traffic Operations Center (TOC); reviewing engineering criteria for various types of plans and related administrative work. Responsibilities may include reviewing development plans for compliance to City specifications, functioning as a project manager for capital improvement projects, and providing technical knowledge to City Staff, elected officials and the general public.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university in civil engineering or related discipline plus 2 years (for Engineer I) or 4 years (for Engineer II) of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications/Licenses:
TN Driver’s License Engineer Intern (for Engineer I) or Professional Engineer (for Engineer II)10 Hours OSHA Training within 1 month of employment
The following must be obtained prior to completion of the probationary period:
TDOT Local Government Guidelines Manual & ROW TrainingTDOT Local Programs CEI TrainingIMSA Traffic Signal Tech I and IIKey
Competencies:
Basic knowledge (Engineer I) or intermediate knowledge (Engineer II) of the following:
Traffic engineering and ITS practices and procedures.
Applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
Engineering terminology, principles, and theories.
Estimating and surveying procedures.
Contract administration and negotiation.
Project management and administrative principles and practices.
Job Content Knowledge:
Proficient with computers and Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), Adobe and Bluebeam.
Proficient with (or ability to be proficient with) CAD, GPS and Arc GIS is desirable.
Proficient with (or ability to be proficient with) various traffic modeling software, signal equipment ITS equipment and signal operation systems.
Language
Skills:
Read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical
Skills:
Work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Define complex problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interprets an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Teamwork:
Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Encourages others to express their ideas and opinions. Provides input into identifying and solving problems. Anticipates need of others for information about job tasks and work environment and provides it to them in a timely manner. Willingly assists others with job tasks when appropriate.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Physical demands and performance of the essential duties of this job requires the incumbent to:
Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
Regularly move about around different worksites.
Frequently positions self to maintain work area and items needed to complete daily tasks.
Regularly communicates information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
Occasionally ascends/descends ladders.
Regularly moves/transports up to 20 pounds.
Occasionally moves/transports up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment:
The work environment is moderately noisy (business office with computers and printers) .Performance of the essential duties of this job requires:
Occasional work near moving mechanical parts
Occasional work in high, precarious places
Occasional work with fumes or airborne particles
Occasional exposure to vibration
Occasional work in outdoor weather conditions
Occasional risk of electrical shock
