Clinical Regulatory Nurse – Long-Term Care: PRN Position Summary
The Clinical Regulatory Nurse – Long-Term Care is responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance, clinical quality standards, and readiness for state and federal surveys within a long-term care facility. This role works collaboratively with nursing leadership and interdisciplinary teams to maintain adherence to applicable healthcare regulations, including those established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), state departments of health, and accrediting bodies.
The Clinical Regulatory Nurse supports policy development, quality improvement initiatives, and staff education to promote safe, compliant, and high-quality resident care.
- Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local long-term care regulations.
- Maintain survey readiness at all times in accordance with CMS Conditions of Participation and state requirements.
- Lead preparation for annual and complaint surveys.
- Coordinate plans of correction and monitor follow-up actions.
- Conduct mock surveys and internal regulatory audits.
- Audit clinical documentation for accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure proper MDS, care plan, infection control, and medication documentation standards are met.
- Review incidents, grievances, and adverse events for compliance risk.
- Develop, review, and update policies and procedures to align with regulatory changes.
- Track regulatory updates from CMS and state health departments.
- Educate leadership and staff regarding regulatory changes and implications.
- Collaborate with Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) teams.
- Analyze quality indicators and implement corrective action plans.
- Support infection prevention and control compliance programs.
- Provide regulatory education to nursing and interdisciplinary staff.
- Serve as a resource for survey processes and documentation standards.
- Assist with onboarding education related to compliance expectations.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing within the state of practice.
- Minimum 3–5 years of clinical nursing experience in long-term care.
- Prior experience with regulatory compliance, quality assurance, or survey process strongly preferred.
- Experience with CMS surveys and state health department inspections required.
- Strong knowledge of long-term care regulations and CMS guidelines.
- Excellent auditing and documentation review skills.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
- Effective communication and staff education skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Primarily on‑site role within a long‑term care facility.
- Frequent interaction with residents, families, staff, and surveyors.
- Ability to review electronic health records and conduct chart audits.
