Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician I (S) | Position # | Grade NC06
OverviewThe North Carolina Forest Service is an emergency response division that provides forest protection, resource management and environmental education to residents and landowners throughout the state.
Primary Responsibilities- Maintain and repair heavy equipment, troubleshoot complex mechanical problems including diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, final drives, hydraulics, brakes and undercarriage problems.
- Use and interpret repair manuals and schematics.
- Provide irrigation equipment repair, including electric, PTO and engine‑driven pumps, and maintain specialized forestry equipment.
- Perform welding and metal fabrication as required.
Environmental exposures include adverse weather, forest pests, hunters, intense heat, dust and smoke.
Typical work hours are 8:00‑5:00, Monday to Friday. Some duties require evening, holiday and/or weekend work. Wildfire and disaster/emergency response functions require readiness 24/7. Overnight travel may be required for emergency response and training.
Location and TransportationDuty station: 221 Airport Road, Fayetteville, NC.
Employees must operate a state vehicle and possess a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License, or obtain one within 360 days of hire in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
Requirements- High school or GED diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in repair and maintenance of automotive or heavy equipment, including welding, fabrication, automotive painting and operation of heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of OSHA and safety regulations, including shop and equipment safety.
- Experience with mechanical, electrical and computer systems.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting and pulling as required by mechanical duties.
- Basic computer skills (email, internet, database).
- EPA certification as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician (required).
- Pre‑employment drug testing required.
Applicants must be willing to work evenings, holidays, weekends, be available for 24/7 emergency response, and be ready to travel overnight as required.
