Building & Trades Instructor
The Building & Trades Instructor will provide students with classroom and hands-on instruction in carpentry, construction, and related trades. The instructor will prepare students for industry certifications, postsecondary training, and entry-level employment in the building and construction fields, while reinforcing workplace readiness skills and safety practices.
Essential Job Functions- Deliver engaging instruction aligned to Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) CTE competencies in Building & Trades.
- Provide hands-on experiences with tools, materials, and construction techniques.
- Integrate safety practices in all aspects of instruction, ensuring compliance with OSHA and school policies.
- Prepare students for industry-recognized credentials (e.g., OSHA 10/30, NCCER, CPR/First Aid, etc.).
- Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments that align with state standards and industry expectations.
- Supervise and manage a safe, organized, and productive lab/shop environment.
- Incorporate employability and workplace readiness skills into daily instruction.
- Maintain accurate student records, grades, and reports in compliance with division and VDOE requirements.
- Collaborate with CTE colleagues, business partners, and advisory councils to enhance program relevance.
- Support students in SkillsUSA or other CTE-related student organizations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the school administration.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least four years of documented, progressive occupational experience in building and construction trades (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, or general contracting).
- Ability to obtain or hold a Virginia CTE Provisional or Collegiate Professional Teaching License in Building Trades.
- Demonstrated expertise with construction tools, equipment, and safety procedures.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to preparing students for postsecondary success and industry certifications.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a construction-related field.
- Valid industry certifications (e.g., OSHA, NCCER, Journeyman License, Contractor's License).
- Prior teaching, mentoring, or training experience.
- Experience with instructional technology and blended learning platforms.
