Position Summary

A Lead Mechanical Engineer designs advanced building systems, prepares design documents and performs engineering calculations in coordination with project teams and multiple disciplines. The Lead Engineer trains, mentors and provides leadership to design staff, may supervise or manage others, and is involved in business development, corporate operations and risk management activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare or direct the preparation of simple to complex design documents, system layouts, detailed drawings, schematics and specifications.
  • Lead project and design efforts from concept design through completion.
  • Review shop drawings for conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Perform research and make recommendations regarding feasibility of systems or equipment and evaluate products for application.
  • Produce solutions to complex engineering problems and design challenges, either directly or in an advisory capacity.
  • Ensure that drawings, specifications, reports and analyses meet scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements.
  • Proactively advise and mentor less experienced designers and engineers, providing oversight and technical guidance.
  • Recommend project staffing.
  • Direct activities of technical and administrative staff.
  • Continuously develop personal and others’ knowledge.
  • Assist Technical Managers and directors with establishing and implementing goals, policies, objectives and standards at the practice or sector level.
  • Participate in the development of tools, resources and company practices.
  • Implement and reinforce design and engineering standards at the team or practice level.
  • Oversee the quality of projects and designs through the quality review process and regular check‑ins; provide final reviews for projects under purview.
  • Develop, establish and maintain relationships with strategic partners and customers to expand business opportunities.
  • Participate in client, company and industry events to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Foster a client‑centric mindset and approach individually and within the team.
  • Communicate with clients as needed for development and coordination of requirements and scope of work, maintaining proactive communication throughout the project cycle.
  • Anticipate and answer questions from clients and architects; act as a resource and direct fact‑finding and answer questions.
  • Visit job sites to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress.
  • Resolve conflicts involving owners, architects and contractors as required.
  • Identify and fill gaps in industry and discipline knowledge on a continuous basis.
  • Identify and understand emerging technologies and industry trends; stay updated on evolving codes and standards.
  • Share information, updates and related ideas for technical and process improvements with peers and leaders.
  • Understand, teach and apply Henderson’s design guidelines, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Perform a range of project management responsibilities in collaboration with experienced project managers, asking questions when performing unfamiliar tasks.
  • Coordinate project activities such as managing emails, scope and schedule, design team coordination, client meetings, ensuring quality, responding to client questions and coordinating delivery.
  • Consistently perform to industry‐wide expectations associated with carrying a PE license and being an Engineer of Record, including making reasonable engineering decisions and delivering the highest quality of work and accountability to projects.
  • According to business need, may be required and enabled as an Engineer of Record, with additional oversight and responsibility for the overall signing and sealing of the project.
