Senior Transportation Planner – Job Description
Position:
Senior Transportation Planner (Franklin, TN) – manage transportation projects, lead environmental and multimodal studies for statewide, regional, and local agencies; support projects across the Southeast.
- Execute multiple projects in technical capacities, including bridge rehabilitation/replacements, roadway improvements, managed lanes projects, safety improvements, transit, and communications projects.
- Lead identification of environmental constraints and impact analyses, prepare NEPA technical documents such as community impact assessments, environmental justice and limited English proficiency analysis, parks and recreational resources analysis (including Section 4(f) evaluations), indirect and cumulative impacts assessments, feasibility studies, public involvement support, and other planning and coordination for infrastructure projects.
- Manage delivery of task orders under TDOT and other agency on‑call contracts, and federally funded projects such as city and county agency infrastructure projects, demonstrating strong knowledge of NEPA review processes.
- Author and manage projects with multidisciplinary teams of internal staff and subcontractors through all phases of environmental compliance and permitting requirements.
- Demonstrate understanding of project delivery requirements for transportation projects, including Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration protocols.
- Minimum:
- BA/BS in Urban, Regional or Environmental Land Use Planning, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, or related field.
- Eight years of related transportation environmental planning experience or equivalent.
- Experienced in project and budget management, QA/QC practices.
- Experience with permitting and NEPA.
- Ability to travel periodically to client and project sites in Tennessee, including overnight stays.
- Preferred:
- Master’s degree in relevant field.
- Ten or more years of environmental planning and permitting work for Tennessee transportation clients.
- AICP certification.
- GIS software analytical experience and deliverable development.
- Previous TDOT, TN municipalities, or other state DOT experience.
- Strong research, analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams of internal staff and subcontractors.
- Team‑based collaborative environment experience.
- Review and analysis of socioeconomic data, maps, and drawings.
- Relocation is not an option.
- US employment authorization sponsorship not available now or in future.
- All newly hired employees required to attend in‑person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment.
$110,000 to $140,000 per year, based on education, qualifications, experience, and work location.
