Sonny Merryman Inc is seeking a Body Shop Technician in the Chesapeake VA area! Earn $25 to $28 Per Hour! High school diploma or equivalent. At Least 3 Years of Previous Service Technician Experience Fundamental heavy-duty vehicle knowledge with hands-on experience The Senior Service Technician is responsible for advanced vehicle diagnostics, repair, and preventative maintenance across diesel, gasoline, and emerging electric vehicle (EV) systems.

This role combines hands-on mechanical work with complex diagnostic analysis to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality repairs. The ideal candidate is highly skilled in troubleshooting, detail-oriented, and committed to continuous learning in evolving powertrain technologies. ​ Benefits:

Key Responsibilities 1. Vehicle Diagnostics & Repairs (70%) Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues using advanced diagnostic tools and software Perform timely, accurate repairs based on diagnostic findings Service diesel and gasoline engines, including engine systems and components Troubleshoot and repair brake systems (including air brakes), steering, suspension, and transmissions Interpret wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and fault tree logic to resolve issues Install supplemental or auxiliary equipment on new or existing vehicles Communicate repair status, findings, and technical issues clearly with internal teams Collaborate with technicians and support teams to resolve complex technical concerns Participate in technical discussions, case studies, and continuous improvement initiatives Stay current with industry advancements in powertrain and vehicle technologies through ongoing training
2. Shop Organization & Administrative Duties (20%) Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment (5S standards) Accurately document diagnostics, repairs, and findings in Repair Orders (ROs) Follow structured problem-solving methods (Complaint, Cause, Corrective Action) Adhere to safety standards and actively contribute to safety improvements Support overall shop efficiency and workflow organization
3. Electric Vehicle (EV) Diagnostics & Repair (10%) Apply existing mechanical and electrical knowledge to EV systems and components Assist in diagnosing and repairing EV performance issues Learn and support EV systems, including charging interfaces and operational behavior Participate in ongoing EV training and skill development Success Metrics Success in this role is measured by:
Accurate and efficient repair turnaround times High-quality workmanship with minimal or zero rework (“comebacks”) Strong adherence to safety standards Effective collaboration and communication with the service team Continuous skill development and engagement in technical learning Requirements

Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent Fundamental heavy-duty vehicle knowledge with hands-on experience Working knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines Diagnostic and repair experience across engine, air, brake, and transmission systems Ability to use electronic diagnostic tools, equipment, and supporting software Ability to read and follow written instructions, fault trees, wiring diagrams, and theories of operation Strong attention to detail and time management skills Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate within a team Curiosity about how systems work, with a willingness to learn and support problem-solving

Preferred Qualifications Engine and system accreditations (ASE, OEM, or manufacturer-specific) — preferred, not required

Experience with steering and suspension diagnosis and repair Electrical troubleshooting experience Exposure to electric vehicles (EVs), including high-voltage systems or charger interfaces Experience installing supplemental or aftermarket equipment on new vehicles Familiarity with structured problem-solving methods (e.g., Complaint/Cause/Correction or similar)
